Mann Government Fails to Deliver on 45-Day Flood Compensation Promise—Sharma.
Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Vice President Dr. Subhash Sharma has made grave accusations against Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s administration for not keeping its pledges to farmers and flood victims. He claimed that nothing has been done at the local level and that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government has just deceived the public by claiming that compensation would be provided within 45 days.
Key Allegations and Demands
- Broken Promise: Sharma pointed out that on September 12, Chief Minister Mann had announced in a high-level meeting at his official residence that flood-affected farmers would be given a compensation of ₹20,000 per acre within 45 days. However, more than 45 days have passed since the announcement, and the majority of affected families are still deprived of government aid.
- Reality vs. Claims: He stated that the Mann government repeatedly claimed to have completed the special girdawari (damage assessment survey) and promised immediate release of relief, but the reality is that not a single penny has reached the accounts of most farmers and victims. People in the worst-hit areas—such as Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur, and Amritsar—are still waiting for government assistance.
- Political Gimmickry: Sharma criticized Bhagwant Mann, saying that he makes promises and announcements in front of cameras with an eye on upcoming elections but forgets them as soon as the campaign ends. He argued that if the government had dealt honestly with the flood victims, people would not be forced to take to the streets today.
- Immediate Need: He emphasized that farmers devastated by the floods need immediate financial assistance for fertilizers, seeds, house repairs, and sand removal. Many homes are still dilapidated, and people are living without a roof over their heads, while the Mann government’s priority is mere showmanship.
- Mismanagement of Central Funds: Sharma further alleged that ₹12,000 crore provided by the Central Government is lying in the Punjab government’s account, but the Mann government is demonstrating serious negligence in distributing this amount to the people. This clearly shows that the AAP government is concerned only with its own image, not the public.
BJP’s Demand and Warning
The BJP has demanded that the Punjab government immediately complete the girdawari in all flood-affected areas of the state and deposit the compensation into the accounts of farmers and affected families without delay.
Sharma warned that if the government attempts to stall or evade the issue, the BJP, along with the public, will launch a state-level agitation (protest).
He concluded by saying that the farmers of Punjab have always stood by the state in difficult times, and now that they are in crisis, it is the government’s duty to immediately give them their due. However, the Mann government has repeatedly played with the public’s trust, and it will have to face the consequences.
