The police have arrested the main accused in the Panjab University stabbing case, a 17-year-old boy from Mani Majra. He was involved in the murder of Aditya Thakur, a student who was stabbed during a music concert on March 28 at the South Campus (Sector 25). The police also recovered the murder weapon from him.
Earlier, four others — Lavish (19), Udey (19), Sahil (18), and Raghav (20) — were arrested. The group had used fake ID cards to enter the concert. Their police remand was extended for three more days.
In response to the tragedy, Panjab University announced an ex gratia of ₹12.5 lakh for Aditya’s family. The university will also provide free education and hostel stay to Aditya’s sister for her undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
The funds will be given from different university welfare sources, including ₹5 lakh from the poor student welfare fund and ₹6 lakh from amalgamated funds. Some university officials have also donated their one-year honorarium to the victim’s family.
While one student group ended its protest after this announcement, others continue to demand more action at the Student Centre.
To improve safety, PU has appointed Prof Anil Monga as Adviser (Campus Security) and Tejinder Singh Sandhu, a retired Punjab Police SP, as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) for campus security. These steps are part of efforts to make the campus safer after the incident.
