She was arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) a few days ago. She was charged with living in violation of the law. She was forcibly deported despite the community’s request for her release due to her advanced age and precarious condition.

Harjit Kaur, a Punjabi who was residing in America at the age of 73, was deported. She had moved to the United States with her two sons in 1982 and had been there for thirty years. She was arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) a few days ago on suspicion of living unlawfully. Protests against the administration were organised by Americans and Indians. During a regular check-in, Harjit Kaur was arrested. According to her community and family, she had no criminal history. Her request for asylum was denied in 2013.
She had been reporting to ICE every six months in spite of this. She was forcibly deported despite the community’s request for her release because of her advanced age and precarious condition. According to her lawyer, Deepak Ahluwalia, Harjit Kaur and 132 other Indian nationals were flown from Georgia to Armenia and finally to Delhi Airport, where friends and family were waiting. Sukhmeet Kaur, Harjit Kaur’s granddaughter, claimed they were not permitted to meet her. “All they said was that she was being held. We were prohibited from meeting her. We searched for her. She was crying and pleading for assistance when we eventually met, she said.
