One of Bollywood’s most talked-about love triangles—between Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, and Rekha—still interests fans today. The 1981 film Silsila, which featured all three, has long been said to reflect their real-life relationships.
In a recent episode of the “Meri Saheli” podcast, veteran writer and film historian Hanif Zaveri shared new details about what happened behind the scenes.
Zaveri said that Silsila’s director Yash Chopra wanted to show the real-life drama between the three stars in the movie. But Jaya Bachchan was against working in the film because she strongly disliked Rekha.
“Jaya Bachchan never wanted to do Silsila,” Zaveri said. “She deeply disliked Rekha.”
He also shared how Jaya and Amitabh’s love story started during the filming of Do Anjaane. But later, when Amitabh and Rekha grew close, it affected their marriage.
According to Zaveri, Jaya invited Rekha for lunch one day, and made her feelings clear by saying:
“Amitabh is mine. He was mine and will always be mine.”
This meeting reportedly led Rekha to end the relationship with Amitabh.
Zaveri also said that when Amitabh had a life-threatening accident on the sets of Coolie in 1982, Jaya’s care during that time brought them closer again.
Although she was not happy about it, Jaya later agreed to act in Silsila. Zaveri said she was convinced by actor Sanjeev Kumar, her rakhi brother, but only on one condition—that she would be present on set every day, even if she wasn’t shooting a scene.
This story gives fans a deeper look into the emotional journey behind one of Bollywood’s most iconic films.
