An IndiGo flight from Delhi to Srinagar, carrying over 220 passengers, including Trinamool Congress MPs, ran into a sudden hailstorm on Wednesday. The flight, numbered 6E 2142, landed safely, but the incident is now under investigation by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
Sources said that while flying near Amritsar, the pilot noticed bad weather ahead and requested permission from Lahore Air Traffic Control (ATC) to briefly enter Pakistan’s airspace to avoid the turbulence. However, the request was denied.
Without clearance to divert, the aircraft had to stick to its original route and went through the hailstorm, resulting in severe turbulence. The pilot had reported the emergency to Srinagar airport’s air traffic control before landing.
DGCA is now probing the entire incident to understand the sequence of events and how the situation was handled.
