Indian National Sentenced to 4 Years in Sri Lanka for Cricket Match Fixing

An Indian national, Yogi Patel, was sentenced to four years of rigorous imprisonment by the High Court in Matale, Sri Lanka, on Tuesday, in connection with a 2024 match-fixing case.

Patel was charged following a complaint by Upul Tharanga, the chairman of Sri Lanka’s selectors, regarding an attempt to fix matches in the Legends League T20 tournament held in Kandy. Patel was tried in absentia after fleeing the country, despite a travel ban imposed by the court. He was arrested in March last year, released on bail in May under strict conditions, and later fled the country. His lawyers claimed he left due to death threats.

The court had earlier ordered the CID to issue an interpol warrant for his arrest. Sri Lanka’s Prevention of Sports-Related Corruption Act, introduced in 2019, can impose jail terms of up to 10 years and fines over USD 5,50,000 for such offenses.

In addition to the prison sentence, Patel was fined SLR 85 million and ordered to pay SLR 2 million to Tharanga for defamation.
