The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana till Thursday. The region has been experiencing continuous rain with thunderstorms.
In the last 24 hours, Chandigarh received 40 mm of rain. Hoshiarpur saw the highest rainfall with 96 mm. Due to the heavy rain, many low-lying areas and busy roads got waterlogged, causing major problems for the public.
Traffic in Chandigarh was badly affected. With no traffic police present at most places, many roads and junctions saw long traffic jams. The worst-hit area was Tribune Chowk, where waterlogging caused jams up to 2 to 3 kilometers.
Suresh Kumar, a daily commuter, shared his frustration, saying that during traffic problems, police are nowhere to be seen, but are otherwise active to catch rule breakers. He was stuck at the GMCH-32 roundabout for more than 30 minutes.
People are advised to stay safe and plan their travel accordingly.
