Hearing Begins in Colonel Pushpinder Singh Bath Assault Case

The hearing in the assault case involving Colonel Pushpinder Singh Bath has started before Justice Harpreet Singh Brar. The court ruled that the Chandigarh Police, not the Punjab Police, will investigate the case.

The High Court had asked the government whether the ruling should be based on the facts of the case or mutual agreement. It also questioned if the case should be handled by the Chandigarh DGP, the CBI, or a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

Colonel Bath had earlier filed a petition requesting the case be transferred to an independent agency like the CBI. His case was initially heard by Justice Sandeep Moudgil on March 25 and March 28, but it was later removed from the schedule before today’s hearing.

In his petition, Colonel Bath alleged that Punjab Police officers assaulted him and his son on the night of March 13-14 in Patiala. He claimed they were attacked without reason, his official ID and phone were taken, and he was threatened with a fake encounter. The incident reportedly happened in public and was caught on CCTV.

He further alleged that local police did not act despite the seriousness of the crime. His calls for help to senior officials were ignored, and instead of filing an FIR on his complaint, police registered a false case of ‘affray’ against unknown persons. His family had to appeal to senior officials and the Punjab Governor before a proper FIR was registered—eight days later.
