In a shocking incident, an unidentified miscreant hurled a grenade at the residence of former Punjab minister and BJP national executive member Manoranjan Kalia around 1 am on Tuesday. Fortunately, Kalia and his family members escaped unhurt.
The grenade reportedly landed near the main gate of the house located just a few hundred metres from the local police station. The impact of the explosion caused the collapse of a side entrance door.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Manpreet Singh, along with forensic teams, reached the site immediately to initiate investigation. CCTV footage revealed that the assailant arrived in an e-rickshaw, briefly surveyed the surroundings, and lobbed the grenade using his left hand before fleeing in the same vehicle.
Speaking to the media, Kalia recounted the terrifying moment. “I heard a blast and initially thought it came from my generator set. Within a minute, I realised it might be a grenade,” he said.
Kalia also raised serious concerns about police responsiveness. “My gunman tried calling the police station immediately, but no one answered. He had to go there himself to report the attack,” he added.
The incident has triggered widespread concern, with several BJP leaders visiting Kalia’s home to check on his safety and express solidarity.
Security in the area has been heightened, and further details are awaited as the investigation unfolds.
