The Department of Local Government has issued strict orders to regulate the construction of tall buildings near the Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar.
Following instructions from Local Government Minister Dr. Ravjot Singh, the department has asked the Municipal Corporation of Amritsar to take immediate action to stop and monitor any construction that may affect the view and sanctity of the holy shrine.
In an official letter to the Commissioner, the department raised concern over the growing number of high-rise buildings around the temple. It said these structures are blocking the clear view of the Golden Temple, which is not only a sacred place for Sikhs but also an important heritage and architectural landmark.
Krishan Gopal, Under Secretary of Local Government, said that the Darbar Sahib is a spiritual and historical site respected by people around the world. “Strict action must be taken if any construction rules are broken,” the letter said.
The municipal authorities have been ordered to check both ongoing and future construction in the area. If any rules are found to be violated, the authorities must take strong action such as sealing or demolishing the illegal structures. They have also been told to send a report within a week, explaining the actions they have taken.
Earlier in March this year, a controversy had come up regarding a multi-story building being built near the Golden Temple. The building was meant to provide modern accommodation to Sikh Jathedars and priests, but many religious scholars and heritage experts objected, saying its height could be greater than that of the Akal Takht Sahib. This would overshadow the symbolic seat of Sikh power.
The building was being constructed by Kar Seva Bhuri Wale for the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). Work on the upper floors had already been stopped since March.
