Government Begins Preparation for Population Census 2027

The government has officially started preparing for the Population Census 2027, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday.

In a written reply, the minister said that the process began with a gazette notification on June 16, 2025. This notification announced the government’s intention to carry out the nationwide census.

To plan the process, a two-day conference was held in New Delhi on July 3 and 4. The meeting was attended by Census Directors from all states, senior officials from the Directorate of Census Operations, and staff from the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India.

During the conference, experts discussed important topics such as setting up administrative units, using mobile apps for collecting data, and tracking progress in real-time through the Census Management and Monitoring System (CMMS) portal.

The government also plans to allow people to fill in their own census information through self-enumeration. It will also focus on proper training of all workers involved to ensure the census runs smoothly.
