Goosebumps-Inducing ‘Thapp’ Competition in Siana ਪਿੰਡ: Amazing Feat of High Jumping Over Cots.
An exciting competition for the age-old and exhilarating custom of high jumping over cots (manje), known as “Thapp,” was organized under the direction of Councillor Radhe Sham of Ward No. 12, Panchayat of Siana ਪਿੰਡ, Balachaur Municipal Council. The ਮੁੱਖ Guest during the function was Sunil Kaushal Laddi, President of the Municipal Council. The ਪਿੰਡ committee as a whole has begun to provide this sport a competitive framework each year with a number of rewards for the victors, which has further boosted spectator interest.
The young men in this sport, which is equivalent to any kind of gymnastics, stack multiple wooden cots (manje) on top of one another, run a distance, and then jump over them all at once without falling or shaking the cots. Many ਲੋਕ from the nearby villages came to watch this exciting and risky sport.
In order to promote this age-old sport of “Thapp,” the ਪਿੰਡ management committee, which included Surinder Singh Fauji, Chaudhary Harbans Lal, Mukhtar Singh, Jagtar Singh Dhariwal, Ravinder Ravi, Inderjit Sher Gill, Mani Baba, Balram Singh, Comrade Bhinda, and former Councillor Simru Ram, declared that winners were recognized for first, second, and third places:
first place: Rajkumar from Shokran ਪਿੰਡ took first place.
Second Place: With a superb performance, Bakhshish Singh from Mahtpur Ladhani ਪਿੰਡ took home the second place.
Third Place: Following a fierce competition, Satish Kumar from Bakhlour ਪਿੰਡ was named third.
Mahender Singh Coach, the ਪਿੰਡ sarpanch of Barnala Khurd, also attended the event. To encourage the players, Kuldeep Singh Dholi of Shokran ਪਿੰਡ played the dhol, or drum. The committee members recognized Mata Amar Kaur from the Rakkasan Bazigar family, and cash prizes and souvenirs were given to the victors. In order to preserve this Punjabi heritage sport, the committee pledged to organize it on an even bigger scale in the future.
