Earlier this month, some Google Maps users reported that their Timeline data had vanished, sparking complaints about the feature. Google has now acknowledged the issue and confirmed it in an email to affected users.
According to a report from Android Authority, based on a Reddit post by user sweepernosweeping, Google explained that it “experienced a technical issue” that caused the deletion of Timeline data for some users. One user mentioned losing their Timeline data for the past two weeks.
How to Restore Lost Google Maps Timeline Data
Google has provided steps for users who wish to restore their lost Timeline data, particularly if they have a cloud backup. Here’s how to do it:
-
Update Google Maps to the latest version.
-
Open the app and tap on your profile picture in the top right corner.
-
Click on the “Your Timeline” option.
-
On the Timeline screen, tap the cloud icon at the top and select a backup to restore your data.
If you don’t have a backup, unfortunately, there’s no way to recover your lost Timeline data.
While some users successfully restored their data from the cloud backup, others reported incomplete backups or no backup at all. To avoid such issues in the future, Google recommends users enable the cloud backup option for their Google Maps Timeline, as it is not enabled by default.
