On Wednesday, a team from the ਪੰਜਾਬ Vigilance Bureau, led by SSP Vigilance (Amritsar Range) Lakhbir Singh, carried out a raid at the residence of senior Akali leader and former ਪੰਜਾਬ ਮੰਤਰੀ Bikram Singh Majithia. The raid took place at his house in the upscale Green Avenue area of Amritsar.
According to Majithia and his family, around 30 ਲੋਕ, many in plain clothes identifying themselves as vigilance officials, entered the house without prior notice. He was meeting several visitors at the time.
Majithia shared a video on X and other social media platforms, where he could be seen arguing with the officers, questioning the manner of the raid. He said that the sudden and forceful entry of officers had shocked his family, and claimed that the state ਸਰਕਾਰ was misusing its power.
His wife, Ganieve Kaur Majithia, an Akali MLA, also confirmed that the family was given no explanation for the raid. The area around their house was heavily cordoned off, with ਪੁਲਿਸ commandos deployed, and media was not allowed near the house.
So far, vigilance officials have not given any official statement about what they were searching for or what prompted the action.
Majithia accused the Bhagwant Mann-led AAP ਸਰਕਾਰ of trying to frame him after allegedly failing to find anything in the earlier drug case filed against him in 2021. He said:
“When the ਪੰਜਾਬ ਸਰਕਾਰ couldn’t find anything in the drug case, they are now trying to trap me in other false cases.”
“Bhagwant Mann ji, no matter how many fake and fabricated cases you file, I will not be afraid. I will continue to speak up for the ਲੋਕ of ਪੰਜਾਬ.”
The raid has sparked political tension, with supporters and leaders from the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) terming it an act of political vendetta. The full details of the raid are still awaited as the Vigilance Bureau has not yet made an official statement.
