The future of the Kartarpur Corridor is uncertain after a terror attack in Pahalgam raised tensions between India and Pakistan. Even with the rising tension, the corridor stayed open today, and pilgrims continued to visit.
The Indian government has not yet said whether the project will continue or be paused. The BJP-led government is facing a difficult choice. The party wants to grow stronger in Punjab, where Sikh support is important. Since the corridor is special to Sikhs, closing it may hurt the party’s image in the community.
Pakistan could also lose a lot of money if the corridor shuts down. It charges USD 20 from each visitor at its Integrated Check Post. Around 200–400 people use the corridor daily, especially on weekends. India has asked Pakistan many times to stop charging this fee, but Pakistan has refused.
