Former Jathedar Giani Harpreet Accuses SAD of Blocking SGPC Polls to Retain Power

Former Jathedar of Takht Damdama Sahib, Giani Harpreet Singh, has accused the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) of stopping the SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) elections to keep control over the Sikh religious body.

He made this statement during a meeting of a special panel formed by Akal Takht to oversee SAD’s membership drive. However, the SAD had already rejected this panel and conducted its own membership campaign, which led to Sukhbir Singh Badal being re-elected as the party president.

The panel includes several rebel leaders from SAD who want a change in the party’s leadership. All five members of the panel and Giani Harpreet attended the meeting, which lasted six hours.

Giani Harpreet blamed Sukhbir Badal for the party’s downfall and said the SAD is scared of losing in the SGPC elections. He claimed that Badal is stopping the elections to stay in power.

Other committee members, including Gurpartap Singh Wadala and Manpreet Singh Ayali, also criticised Sukhbir Badal. They said the Badal family is controlling both SAD and SGPC and accused them of running a fake membership drive, ignoring Akal Takht’s directions.

The meeting was organised by Amarinder Singh Libra and Gurjeet Singh Talwandi. The leaders believe that holding fair elections can help bring unity and solve important issues facing the Sikh community.
