Amid heavy security, various Sikh groups peacefully observed the 41st anniversary of Operation Bluestar at the Akal Takht on Friday.
For the first time since 1999, the Akal Takht’s acting head, Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, did not address the Sikh community or honour the families of those who died during the 1984 Army operation. This move helped avoid any tension between different Sikh organisations.
The Akal Takht was heavily damaged during the military action in 1984, and a new building was constructed in 1998. Since 1999, the Dal Khalsa and other Sikh bodies have been observing the anniversary each year. Usually, the Jathedar gives a speech and honours families of those who lost their lives. But this year, SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami took on the responsibility of honouring the families instead.
Damdami Taksal chief Harnam Singh Dhuma, who had earlier opposed Gargaj’s plans to lead the event, expressed relief. Speaking to the media, he thanked Dhami for handling the situation calmly, which helped avoid internal clashes and sent a message of unity to Sikhs around the world.
Earlier, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale’s sons, Ishar Singh and Indarjeet Singh, had also raised objections to Gargaj leading the event.
Overall, the event remained peaceful and respectful, with a strong focus on unity within the Sikh community.
