FIR Filed Against Anurag Kashyap Over Remarks on Brahmins; Director Issues Apology

An FIR has been registered against filmmaker Anurag Kashyap at Bajaj Nagar police station over his alleged remarks about the Brahmin community on social media, officials confirmed on Sunday.

The complaint was lodged by Anil Chaturvedi, a resident of Barkat Nagar, on Saturday night. According to Sub-Inspector Ram Kripal, the complaint alleges that Kashyap used abusive language against Brahmins in a reply to a user on a social media platform.

The controversy comes in the backdrop of Kashyap’s upcoming film Phule, based on the lives of social reformers Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule. The film had already drawn attention and debate over its portrayal of caste issues.

In response to the criticism surrounding the film, Kashyap had engaged with users on social media, during which he allegedly made the comment that sparked outrage. The remark quickly went viral, with many calling it offensive and targeting the director with heavy backlash.

Facing growing pressure and even threats, Kashyap issued a public apology on Instagram on Saturday. “This is my apology, not for my post but for that one line taken out of context and the brewing hatred,” he wrote. “No action or speech is worth your daughter, family, friends and colleagues getting rape and death threats from the kingpins of sanskar.”

Kashyap clarified that while he stands by his overall views, he regrets the impact of the specific line in question. “If you want an apology, here it is,” he added.

In a separate Instagram post, he shared a screenshot of the controversial exchange, urging people to consider the full context before reacting. “Everyone has read the response… and they’re all outraged as well. At least look at the context before you write,” he wrote.

The situation continues to evolve, as debate grows around freedom of expression, social media responsibility, and the limits of artistic commentary on sensitive topics like caste.
