An FIR has been registered against BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya and Republic TV Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami for allegedly spreading false information, police said.
The case was filed at High Grounds police station based on a complaint by Shrikant Swaroop B N, head of the legal cell of the Indian Youth Congress. The case is registered under Sections 192 and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deal with causing provocation and insult that can lead to public unrest.
Swaroop accused Malviya and Goswami of leading a campaign to spread false news. He claimed that they wrongly said the Istanbul Congress Centre in Turkey is the office of the Indian National Congress (INC).
He said the goal was to mislead people, defame the INC, stir nationalist feelings, and cause unrest. He also said the act could harm national security and democracy.
The complaint mentions that India-Turkey relations are already tense due to Turkey’s support for Pakistan. In this context, spreading such false claims could make things worse.
Swaroop called this act a serious attack on India’s democracy and urged the Press Council, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the CBI, and other authorities to take immediate action.
