Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has ended his hunger strike and started drinking water again. Punjab Advocate General Gurminder Singh informed the Supreme Court about this on Friday.
Dhaliwal had been on a hunger strike since November 26, 2024, demanding the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, pensions for farmers and farm workers, farm loan waivers, reinstatement of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, and compensation for the families of farmers who died during the 2020-21 protests.
Farm leader Hardo Jhande said that Dallewal had not consumed water since March 19 to protest against police actions at Shambhu and Khanauri, as well as the arrest of farmers. However, he started drinking water again on Friday.
Earlier, Dallewal was only drinking water during his hunger strike, but on January 18, after persuasion from the government, he agreed to take medical assistance. He decided to end his fast after the last group of 245 arrested farmers, including Sarwan Singh Pandher, Kaka Singh Kotda, and Abhimanyu Kohar, was released from Patiala jail early on Friday.
