ECI’s Free Ride Service Wins Hearts in Ludhiana West Bypoll

In a thoughtful and inclusive move, the Election Commission of India (ECI) arranged free vehicle assistance for senior citizens and persons with disabilities during the Ludhiana West by-election held on Thursday. The initiative was widely praised by voters who often face challenges reaching polling booths on their own.

The special service made it easier for elderly and differently-abled voters to travel comfortably from their homes to polling stations and back, ensuring that no one was left out of the democratic process due to physical limitations.

“We’re committed to making elections accessible to every citizen, regardless of age or physical ability. Every voter deserves the chance to participate without barriers,” said a polling booth officer overseeing the service.

Voters began availing of the facility early in the morning to avoid the heat, and were assisted by volunteers and polling staff, who also helped with wheelchairs and entry assistance to ensure a smooth experience with minimal waiting time.

Among the many who benefited was 78-year-old Harbans Kaur, who expressed heartfelt gratitude:

“This is the first time I didn’t have to worry about how to reach the polling booth. The ride was smooth, and the officials and volunteers were very kind.”

Another voter, Kulwinder Singh, who lives alone, shared how this service made his vote possible:

“I had no one to accompany me, but thanks to the free vehicle service, I didn’t have to miss my vote. I was treated with so much respect—it truly felt like my voice mattered today.”

The effort is part of the ECI’s larger commitment to accessible and inclusive elections, ensuring that every eligible citizen—regardless of age, health, or mobility—can participate in shaping the nation’s future.

The move has set a positive example and raised hopes that such citizen-friendly services will become a standard practice in all future elections across India.
