‘Do you know Kannada?’ Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah asks President Murmu; she replies. President Droupadi Murmu on Monday said she would make efforts to learn Kannada while emphasizing the importance of preserving India’s diverse languages, cultures, and traditions.
“Even though Kannada is not my mother tongue, I would like to express to the honorable chief minister how much I value all of my nation’s languages, customs, and cultures. Speaking during the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing’s (AIISH) Diamond Jubilee celebration in Mysuru, Murmu stated, “I have the utmost respect and regard for each of them.”
She made her comments after Chief Minister Siddaramaiah questioned the dignitaries on the dais if they could understand Kannada after speaking in the language.
Murmu called on everyone to actively preserve their languages, traditions, and cultural heritage.
“I wish that everyone continues to keep their language alive, preserves their traditions and culture, and moves forward in that direction. I extend my best wishes for this. And I will certainly make an effort to learn Kannada, little by little,” she added with a smile.

President Murmu landed at Mysuru airport earlier in the day, where she was welcomed by Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

The Diamond Jubilee also saw the presence of prominent leaders, including Union minister Anupriya Patel, Karnataka health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, and BJP MP Yaduveer Wadiyar.
“Do you know Kannada?” Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inquired, grinning at the president as he began his Kannada speech.
“Everyone living in this state should learn to speak Kannada,” Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah underlined months prior, adding, “We are all Kannadigas.” Everyone in this state should learn Kannada since people from all languages have moved here.
Opposition parties and leaders had protested his comments. In the past, Siddaramaiah had also pushed for the Kannada language to be used more widely.
