A Delhi court on Monday officially closed a sexual harassment case filed under the POCSO Act against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The case was based on allegations made by a wrestler who was a minor at the time.
The case took a major turn in 2023 when the wrestler’s father admitted during the investigation that the complaint was false. He said the allegations were made out of frustration, believing Brij Bhushan had treated his daughter unfairly.
Following this, the Delhi Police found no supporting evidence and recommended closing the case. Their closure report was filed on June 15, 2023. Later, during a private court hearing, the girl also told the judge that she was satisfied with the investigation and had no objection to ending the case.
Accepting the police report, Additional Sessions Judge Gomti Manocha said, “Cancellation accepted.”
However, Brij Bhushan still faces legal trouble in another case filed by six senior women wrestlers. They have accused him of sexual harassment, stalking, and criminal intimidation under several sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The accusations against him led to large-scale protests in 2023, with leading Indian wrestlers like Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia, and Vinesh Phogat demanding justice. Their movement brought national focus to the need for stronger protections for athletes in Indian sports bodies.
Brij Bhushan, who is also a former BJP MP, has repeatedly denied all the allegations against him.
