The number of people who died in the explosion at Sigachi Industries’ pharma factory in Pashamylaram, Telangana has increased to 35, police said on Tuesday.
District Superintendent of Police Paritosh Pankaj confirmed the toll and said that many bodies were found under the debris. So far, 31 bodies have been recovered from the rubble, while 3 people died in the hospital during treatment. The rescue work is still going on.
Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, along with some ministers, visited the site of the accident.
Pranaam Hospitals in Miyapur said they received 21 injured people on Monday, most of them with burns and head injuries. Two were already dead when brought in, and one died later during treatment.
Dhruva Hospitals in Patancheru received 11 patients. Two were referred to bigger hospitals. Out of the nine being treated, five are on ventilators. Seven have serious burns ranging from 40 to 80 percent, and two have lighter injuries.
A revenue department officer said only nine of the dead have been identified so far. Most of the workers who died were from other states like Odisha, West Bengal, and Bihar. The rest of the bodies will need DNA testing for identification.
The blast, which happened on Monday, is believed to have been caused by a chemical reaction.
Sigachi Industries is a pharmaceutical company that makes medicines and chemical ingredients. The company also works with vitamins, mineral blends, and other pharma-related services.
