The Congress party has strongly criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not yet briefing the country on his recent phone call with US President Donald Trump. Congress leaders demanded that Modi immediately hold an all-party meeting upon his return from his international visit to share what was discussed.
The party also expressed serious concern over a planned lunch between US President Trump and Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir. Congress called it a “huge setback” for Indian diplomacy and said Modi should have clearly told the US President about India’s displeasure.
Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, “If Indira Gandhi had been Prime Minister, she would definitely have spoken out against such a meeting.” He also suggested forming a “Pahalgam Review Committee” similar to the Kargil Review Committee, to study recent terror-related events more closely.
Ramesh further said India should not remain silent while the US appears to favour Pakistan. He listed three major diplomatic “blows” for India:
-
Trump’s one-on-one lunch with Pakistan’s army chief.
-
A US general calling Pakistan a “phenomenal partner” in fighting terrorism.
-
Trump taking credit for India pausing military action against Pakistan, claiming it was due to his trade deal offer — a statement India denies.
The Congress stressed that Modi must respond to these claims in Parliament and clarify India’s stand, adding that India’s diplomacy should be based more on strong actions, not just good optics.
In response, the BJP defended the Prime Minister, saying Modi made it very clear to Trump that India does not accept any third-party involvement in its issues with Pakistan.
BJP leader Amit Malviya said the Congress is refusing to accept India’s strong foreign policy and accused it of siding with Pakistan. “If the Congress does not believe in India’s stand, then it seems they are acting like Pakistan’s partner,” he said.
Another BJP spokesperson, Pradeep Bhandari, added, “If Pakistan fires bullets, India answers with bombs. Modi gave a clear message. Congress should stop questioning the country’s strength.”
The BJP also accused Congress of spreading lies and weakening India’s image, while insisting that under Modi, India is now seen globally as a powerful and rising nation.
The political battle continues to heat up as both parties trade sharp words over India’s diplomatic handling of Pakistan and the US.
