Congress MPs Urge PM Modi to Declare Amritsar a “No-War Zone”

Congress Lok Sabha MPs Gurjeet Singh Aujla and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to declare Amritsar a “no-war zone” and seek global recognition for the same through the United Nations.

The demand comes just days after a senior Army official revealed that Pakistan had targeted the Golden Temple with drones during last month’s border tensions. Fortunately, the Indian armed forces successfully neutralised the attacks.

The border conflict escalated following Operation Sindoor, which India launched in response to a terror attack in Pahalgam.

In their separate letters — Randhawa on June 2 and Aujla on June 4 — both MPs stressed the sacred and global significance of the Golden Temple, the holiest shrine of Sikhism, visited by millions each year.

Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla said, “The Golden Temple is a symbol of world peace and its security is a shared responsibility of India and the international community.” He demanded a permanent and non-political security arrangement for the shrine, similar to the status of Vatican City.

Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa raised concerns over Amritsar’s proximity to the Pakistan border. He stated that the rising geopolitical tensions had once again exposed the city’s vulnerability. “For Sikhs, the Golden Temple is as sacred as Mecca is to Muslims or the Vatican is to Christians,” he said in his letter.

Meanwhile, Sikh organisations in Pakistan have reportedly made a similar request — that Nankana Sahib, the birthplace of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, also be declared a “no-war zone.”

Both leaders called for immediate steps to safeguard religious sites of global importance from future military threats, highlighting the need for a non-violent buffer around sacred spaces.
