Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday said that the government has strong and clear evidence against people involved in drug rackets and making money from drug deals. Without naming Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who was arrested a day earlier, Mann said they had found important clues from seized mobiles, laptops, documents, and business records. He added that there is now a clear money trail that connects the accused to illegal drug money.
Majithia will soon be taken to court, where the Vigilance Bureau is expected to ask for his custody to continue the investigation.
Mann rejected claims that the arrest was politically motivated. He called the arrested person a “big crocodile” in the drug trade and said another “big fish” would be caught soon. He also warned that any property bought with drug money would be demolished.
The Chief Minister said earlier, Opposition parties used to complain that his government was only arresting small drug peddlers. “Now that we’ve caught a kingpin, they are all uniting and crying political vendetta,” he said. He also suggested that those defending Majithia might be involved in similar illegal activities.
Mann said this fight against drugs had now become a battle between AAP and all other political parties. He promised that no matter how powerful the people behind the drug trade are, or who supports them politically, his government will not let them go free.
He added that the government had already acted against drug suppliers and broken supply lines, and now they are going after those who control the whole racket.
