In a compassionate step towards supporting patients with life-threatening illnesses, a new palliative care unit is being set up at the Civil Hospital in Ludhiana. The initiative, led by District Family Welfare Officer Dr Amanpreet Kaur, aims to provide specialised care to cancer patients and their families, focusing on comfort, pain management, and emotional support.

Dr Amanpreet explained that palliative care is different from curative treatment. “It focuses on improving the quality of life by reducing suffering and addressing not just physical, but also emotional and spiritual needs,” she said. “This kind of care can be introduced at any stage of illness and can work alongside other treatments.”

While some palliative services already exist at the hospital, the upcoming unit will provide a dedicated space for patients. The ward will initially have 10 beds, and arrangements for the required medical equipment are currently underway. Dr Amanpreet also highlighted the need for more paramedical staff to ensure smooth functioning once the unit is operational.

Families of patients are expected to benefit as well. Sukhpreet Kaur, whose mother is in the terminal stage of cancer, shared that palliative care helped her family manage stress and gave them the strength to face their challenges. “It eased our emotional burden and gave us much-needed support during a very difficult time,” she said.

The new unit is a promising step toward more compassionate healthcare in Ludhiana, offering dignity, relief, and holistic care to those in critical need.
