China Warns India Against Using Tibet Issue to Interfere in Its Affairs

China has asked India not to use the Tibet issue to interfere in its internal matters. The Chinese Foreign Ministry gave this message on Friday and said it hopes India will not let this issue harm the relationship between the two countries.

This came a day after a senior Indian minister made a rare statement about the Dalai Lama. The minister said that only the Dalai Lama himself and the trust he created have the right to decide who will be his next successor as the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism.

This comment goes against China’s long-standing view. China believes it has the right to choose the next Dalai Lama, based on rules from ancient times during its imperial rule.

Tibet remains a sensitive topic for China, which sees the Dalai Lama as a separatist, even though he says he wants only greater autonomy for the Tibetan people, not independence.

This issue has added to the tensions between India and China, which already have a strained relationship over border disputes and other matters.
