Actress Nushrratt Bharuccha says her role in the 2021 horror film Chhorii completely changed how audiences and the film industry see her. The film gave her the chance to lead a strong female-driven story and opened doors to more such roles.
“After Chhorii, I got to do Janhit Mein Jaari, Akelli, and now there are two or three more films coming up,” said Nushrratt. “I didn’t go out specifically looking for these roles, but somehow Chhorii changed how people see me, and that’s bringing more such scripts to me.”
Chhorii is a remake of the 2017 Marathi film Lapachhapi, directed by Vishal Furia. It tells the story of a pregnant woman named Sakshi, who is haunted by evil spirits targeting her unborn baby. The sequel to the film is set to release on April 11 on Prime Video, continuing Sakshi’s journey with new scares and returning characters.
Nushrratt, who is also known for fun entertainers like Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, and Dream Girl, said Chhorii was the toughest film of her career. “It wasn’t just about headlining the film—it gave me the biggest challenge as an actor. I had to push myself emotionally in ways I hadn’t done before,” she said.
She added, “I don’t know what an eight-month pregnant woman goes through, or what it feels like to be trapped and tormented by people and ghosts. It was a completely unreal experience. But it gave me space as an actor to explore emotions and situations I had never faced.”
