OpenAI’s ChatGPT has taken over X with its GPT-4o model, which has been used to create an array of Ghibli-style images, memes, and artwork. The trend started when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared his new profile picture on X, which was a Ghibli-style rendering of himself. From movie scenes to personal photos, everything began getting transformed into Ghibli-style art within hours, leading to a wave of creative reimaginings.
Studio Ghibli, known for its iconic animation style and heartfelt stories, is at the center of this AI art trend. Its films, such as “Spirited Away” and “Howl’s Moving Castle,” have garnered worldwide acclaim. GPT-4o’s ability to quickly convert any image into Ghibli-style art has led to a flood of memes, movie stills, and historical photos being reinterpreted in this unique style on social media.
However, this surge in AI-created art has ignited a debate, especially considering the views of Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki, who has previously expressed strong opposition to AI. Miyazaki once stated that he was “utterly disgusted” by AI, calling it an “insult to life itself.” He warned that the increasing use of AI could signal a loss of faith in human creativity and urged against incorporating AI into artistic endeavors.
This controversy has fueled broader discussions about the potential negative impact of AI on the art world, including concerns about its environmental footprint and its effect on human creativity. Critics argue that relying on AI for art could diminish the value of traditional, human-made works and creativity.
