Leaders of the BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) have called for reforms in global institutions. They said BRICS is an important platform for cooperation, especially when the world is facing conflicts and economic challenges.
India’s Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said BRICS supports fair global decisions and better representation in world bodies.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang said BRICS countries should lead efforts to improve global governance.
Modi Highlights Climate Justice
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke about climate change and said rich countries must help poorer nations reduce emissions. He said, “For India, climate justice is not a choice but a duty.”
India will lead BRICS next year. Modi said under India’s leadership, BRICS will stand for “Building Resilience and Innovation for Cooperation and Sustainability.”
Despite this unity, BRICS countries have different views on some issues. In a joint statement, they said petroleum will still be important in developing countries — showing that the group still faces challenges in agreeing on climate and energy policies.
India’s Bilateral Talks
On the sidelines of the summit, PM Modi held several meetings with world leaders:
-
With Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Modi discussed reviewing the ASEAN-India Free Trade Agreement to make trade more balanced.
-
With Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, Modi talked about working together in areas like medicine, biotechnology, and digital technology.
-
With Bolivian President Luis Arce, the focus was on cooperation in minerals, healthcare, trade, and space.
-
Modi also met Uruguay’s President Yamandú Orsi to boost ties.
India’s active role at the summit shows its growing influence and focus on building stronger global partnerships ahead of taking over the BRICS presidency next year.
