Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Tuesday made fun of the BJP for distributing sindoor (vermilion) in Ludhiana as part of their campaign, which was meant to celebrate the success of Operation Sindoor against Pakistan.
Speaking about the upcoming Ludhiana West Assembly by-election on June 19, Mann joked, “Is BJP now launching a ‘One Nation, One Husband’ scheme? Which husband would tell his wife to use sindoor sent by Modi?”
AAP spokesperson Neel Garg also criticized the move, saying, “Only a husband has the right to give sindoor to his wife. What gives a political party the right to do that?”
Their comments sparked backlash, especially from BJP leader Pritpal Singh Balliawal, who called it “shameful.” He explained that Operation Sindoor was a military action named after the red mark many Hindu women wear, which was how terrorists identified their victims during an attack. He said the campaign was meant to honor the victims and the Indian Army’s efforts.
Balliawal added, “Making fun of this operation shows a lack of respect for our soldiers, their wives, and the sacred meaning of sindoor, which stands for love, sacrifice, and devotion.”
