Beas Village to be Renamed After Fauja Singh as Punjab Bids Farewell

Legendary marathon runner Fauja Singh was cremated with full state honours today at his native village Beas in Jalandhar.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, and several political leaders attended the ceremony to pay their respects. Large crowds from nearby villages also gathered to say their final goodbye to the iconic runner.

CM Mann, while speaking to the media, announced that the name of Beas village would be changed in honour of Fauja Singh. He also shared that the village school will be renamed after him. Since Jalandhar is a sports hub, a statue of Fauja Singh may be installed at the Government Sports College—based on the family’s wishes.

Governor Kataria recalled walking with the veteran runner during last year’s “Nasha Mukt Yatra” and praised his dedication to a drug-free Punjab.

The family received a condolence letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who praised Fauja Singh’s physical and mental strength. The PM noted how Fauja Singh, who took up running at an advanced age, inspired countless youth across India to embrace fitness.
