Bangladeshi National Arrested for Alleged Attack on Saif Ali Khan Seeks Bail, Claims False Case

A 30-year-old Bangladeshi national, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, who was arrested for allegedly stabbing Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan at his Bandra residence, has filed for bail, arguing that a false case has been registered against him.

In a plea before the sessions court on Friday, Shariful denied the charges, asserting that the First Information Report (FIR) against him was “patently false.” He stated that the case against him was fabricated, and the arrest was made illegally, as the investigating agency had violated the provisions of Section 47 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). Section 47 mandates that the arrested individual be informed about the grounds of their arrest and their right to bail.

Saif Ali Khan, 54, was attacked by an intruder inside his 12th-floor apartment in Bandra on January 16. The actor was stabbed multiple times and underwent emergency surgery at Lilavati Hospital. Shariful was arrested two days after the attack.

In his bail plea, Shariful further argued that even if witness statements were considered true, they would not meet the legal requirements to charge him under Section 311 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which relates to robbery or dacoity committed with the intent to cause death or grievous hurt. He claimed that the investigation was nearly complete, with only the filing of the chargesheet remaining, and that he had cooperated fully with the authorities.

Shariful’s plea stated that there was no need to continue his detention as it would not serve any useful purpose. The court is scheduled to hear his bail application on April 1.
