Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said another person has been arrested for allegedly posting “pro-Pakistan and communal” content on social media, bringing the total number of such arrests to 94 in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack in April.
The latest arrest was made in Nalbari district, following close surveillance. “Crackdown on anti-national elements continues,” Sarma posted on X (formerly Twitter), adding that the accused, Safiqul Haque, had been using multiple SIM cards to spread inflammatory content via Facebook.
The Assam Police, especially the Kamrup unit, have been actively targeting individuals suspected of sharing anti-India or communal posts in the wake of the terror attack. Sarma reiterated his firm stance: “The state-wide crackdown on traitors will continue and nobody will be spared.”
He also noted that while the National Security Act (NSA) would not be applied to every case, it would be used selectively against those considered a serious threat to national security.
In a related development, opposition AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam was earlier arrested on sedition charges for allegedly defending Pakistan’s role in the Pahalgam incident. Though he was granted bail, authorities later booked him under the NSA, signalling the government’s intent to take a hard line on such cases.
