In a major breakthrough, the Amritsar rural police on Sunday arrested two men, including an Indian Army jawan, for allegedly spying for Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
The arrested men have been identified as Gurpreet Singh, also known as Gopi Fauji, currently posted in Jammu, and his associate Sahil Masih. Both are residents of Dhariwal village in the Lopoke police station area.
According to Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, Gurpreet was in direct contact with ISI handlers and had allegedly shared sensitive military information with them using pen drives. “Two mobile phones with virtual numbers used for secret communication have been recovered,” he said, adding that investigations are underway to uncover the full extent of the espionage network.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Maninder Singh revealed that Gurpreet joined the Army in 2016 and used his access to collect and pass on classified information. The police believe the spying operation was linked to a Dubai-based drug trafficker named Arjan, also from Dhariwal, who reportedly introduced Gurpreet to the ISI five months ago.
“Since then, Gurpreet was regularly collecting and handing over sensitive data at pre-decided locations,” the SSP said.
The police further said Gurpreet was being paid for the spying through a complex web of financial transactions involving friends, relatives, and foreign accounts to hide the money trail.
Both Gurpreet and Sahil were caught during an intelligence-led operation while allegedly attempting to hand over more sensitive information.
The case has raised serious concerns about cross-border spying and the use of drug networks to facilitate such operations. Police say more arrests are likely as the investigation continues to trace the wider network, including foreign links and local collaborators.
