In a shocking daylight robbery, three armed men looted nearly Rs 40 lakh from an HDFC Bank branch in Rihana-Jattan village, located on the Phagwara-Hoshiarpur road, on Friday afternoon.
The robbery happened around 3:10 PM when the three robbers arrived in a white car. Two of them entered the bank with guns, while the third stayed in the car, ready for a quick escape.
Inside the bank, the robbers threatened the branch manager at gunpoint and forced him to tell the cashier, Lovepreet Kaur, to open the cash counter. Scared for their lives, the staff followed their orders. The robbers quickly grabbed all the available cash, which is estimated to be between Rs 38 lakh and Rs 40 lakh.
The entire robbery took less than three minutes. After getting the money, the two robbers rushed out and escaped with their accomplice in the same white car, heading towards Hoshiarpur. Police believe they may have come from Damali village.
Senior police officers, including SSP Gaurav Toora, SP Rupinder Kaur Bhatti, and DSP Bharat Bhushan, reached the spot and launched an investigation. Police teams are checking CCTV footage from the bank and nearby areas to track the robbers and identify their vehicle.
The robbers also took three mobile phones from the bank staff, which were later found discarded in different places. One phone was recovered from Rawalpindi village.
SSP Toora said the investigation is being taken seriously and from multiple angles. He expressed confidence that the robbers would be caught soon. Meanwhile, police have also issued safety guidelines to other banks in the area to prevent similar incidents.
So far, no arrests have been made and the robbers’ identities remain unknown.
