Diljit Dosanjh, the popular Punjabi singer and actor, has received strong support from religious and political leaders after facing backlash for his film Sardaar Ji 3, which stars Pakistani actress Hania Aamir.
Many criticized Diljit for working with an actor from Pakistan, especially after recent tensions between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack. The attack led to the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and India’s military operation called Operation Sindoor targeting terror camps across the border.
On Sunday, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, the officiating Jathedar of Akal Takht—the highest Sikh authority—spoke in support of Diljit. He said there should be no hate or restrictions on the film. Quoting Gurbani, he reminded people that nature itself does not recognize borders. “The sky is one, air moves freely, and birds don’t need passports,” he said.
Diljit also received political support. On Saturday, the BJP had already backed him, calling him a “national asset” and a “global ambassador” of Indian culture.
Now, Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa (Congress), has also defended Diljit. He criticized the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) for demanding that Diljit’s Indian citizenship be revoked over casting a Pakistani actress.
Bajwa said, “This demand is unfair and wrong. Diljit has made India proud on global platforms like Coachella and the Met Gala. He represents Indian and Punjabi culture worldwide, and such contributions should be celebrated, not attacked.”
He also reminded that Indian investors are funding such films and that these projects provide jobs and pride to many people in India, especially in Punjab.
The controversy continues, but support for Diljit from key voices has brought a strong message against hate and censorship.
