AAP MLAs Face Farmer Protests During School Inaugurations in Punjab

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs in Punjab are facing protests from farmers during their visits to schools for inaugurating development projects. On Monday, Rampura Phul MLA Balkar Sidhu and Maur MLA Sukhbir Singh Maiserkhana were questioned and confronted by farmers in separate incidents.

In the first incident at Sidhana village, MLA Balkar Sidhu came to attend an event under the ‘Education Revolution’ campaign. However, members of farmer unions — Bhartiya Kisan Union (Krantikari Punjab) and BKU Ekta Ugrahan — had already gathered to protest. They shouted slogans about police actions at Shambhu and Khanauri borders and also raised concerns about a previous school-related case in Chaoke.

After the event, MLA Sidhu tried to speak with the farmers, but he told them he could only respond to their questions after discussing the matter with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

Later, in Salebrah village, the MLA faced more protests. A young man from the Education Department asked questions about new job recruitments and was briefly detained by police, but released before the event ended. Another protester, Kuldeep Singh Selbrah, questioned why the wall being inaugurated was built years ago and why the school still lacked enough teachers — including one for Punjabi, the mother tongue. The MLA did not give a clear answer.

In a separate incident, AAP MLA Sukhbir Singh Maiserkhana visited Ramgarh Bhundar village. There, members of BKU (Ekta Ugrahan) also raised tough questions. Farmer leaders accused the Punjab government of not keeping its promises. They said the government failed to act against corruption in the Adarsh School system, even though a report confirming the corruption has been with the Education Department for over two months. Instead of taking action, they claimed the government used pressure and force on teachers and farmers.

The protests reflect growing anger among farmers and local groups over unfulfilled promises and ongoing issues in the education and agricultural sectors.
