The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has blame both the BJP and Congress governments at the Centre for taking away Punjab’s rightful share of river water over many years. AAP spokesperson Malvinder Singh Kang said the injustice began with Congress after the 1966 reorganisation of Punjab and is being continued by the BJP-led Central Government.
His comments came after Congress leader Randeep Surjewala accused both AAP and BJP of secretly working together on the water issue. Kang responded by saying both BJP and Congress have a history of harming Punjab’s water rights.
Kang also criticised the Congress party for having different views in Punjab and Haryana. He asked Surjewala to clarify which state’s Congress unit was telling the truth. Kang said that during an all-party meeting, Punjab Congress supported protecting Punjab’s water, but Surjewala was now defending Haryana.
He also accused the Centre of misusing its power by allowing the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) to transfer officers without Punjab’s consent, even though Punjab owns 60% of the BBMB.
Kang praised Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for standing strong on the issue and working to improve Punjab’s irrigation system. He said Punjab would not give in to pressure or be forced to give up its water rights.
