Bhupesh Baghel Rules Out Change in Punjab Congress Leadership

No Plans to Replace PPCC Chief, Baghel’s Strategy to Counter AAP

Punjab Congress in-charge and former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel dismissed speculation about replacing Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Amrinder Singh Raja Warring. During his first visit to Amritsar after taking charge, Baghel pointed towards Warring and stated that there was no need for a leadership change. He emphasized that only the Congress high command had the authority to make such decisions.

His statement comes after Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh accused Warring of being “selfish.” In response, Warring warned party members against indiscipline at a recent public event in Fatehgarh Sahib. He urged Congress leaders to learn from the defeats in Haryana and Maharashtra, where internal conflicts led to setbacks.

Baghel’s Strategy to Counter AAP

Baghel’s visit is seen as a strategic move to revive Congress in Punjab and challenge the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Following AAP’s loss in Delhi, Congress is focusing on strengthening its position in the state ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. Baghel stressed the need for unity among party leaders and targeted AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of being power-hungry and seeking a Rajya Sabha seat after his defeat in Delhi.

During the visit, Baghel avoided commenting on the absence of former Amritsar MP and ex-PPCC president Navjot Singh Sidhu. He received a warm welcome from PPCC and Punjab Youth Congress workers. Senior Congress leaders, including Leader of the Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, former Deputy CM OP Soni, and Amritsar MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla, were also present.
