North Korea has announced the successful test launch of new anti-aircraft missiles, overseen by leader Kim Jong Un, amid escalating tensions with the United States and South Korea. The military threats from Pyongyang come in response to joint military drills conducted by the two allies, which North Korea views as rehearsals for invasion.
According to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the recent missile tests mark North Korea’s sixth weapons testing activity this year. The launches occurred on the same day the US and South Korean militaries concluded their annual Freedom Shield command post exercise, which included various field training exercises.
While US and South Korean officials describe their military drills as defensive, North Korea has condemned them as a significant security threat. Following the commencement of Freedom Shield on March 10, North Korea fired several ballistic missiles into the sea.
In a statement, North Korea’s Defense Ministry alleged that the US-South Korean exercises included simulations aimed at destroying underground facilities related to its nuclear arsenal. An unidentified spokesperson warned of serious consequences if similar actions are repeated, asserting that such “reckless military moves” could jeopardize the sovereignty and security of a nuclear weapons state.
The spokesperson’s remarks emphasized the severity of the situation, stating, “The accumulated reckless military moves of the US and the ROK, seized with the daydream that they can jeopardize the sovereignty and security of a nuclear weapons state, can undoubtedly bring the gravest consequences they do not want.”
