Punjab Education Department Bans Student Portrayals of Sahibzadas in Stage Plays

The Directorate of School Education in Punjab has ordered all District Education Officers (DEOs) and school heads to stop students from portraying the Sahibzadas (sons) of Guru Gobind Singh and their family members in stage plays. This decision follows a request from Iqbal Singh Lalpura, chairman of the National Commission for Minorities, after concerns were raised about schools misinterpreting guidelines. Some plays depicted the Sahibzadas being bricked alive, which sparked objections.

In response, the Commission has created a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure that no one, including students, impersonates Sikh Gurus or their family members in any form of performance. The SOP highlights the cultural and religious significance of these historical figures and aims to uphold the Sikh code of conduct, known as ‘Rehat Maryada.’

According to the SOP, the stories of Sikh Gurus and their family members should only be shared in written or spoken formats, or through animation. The guidelines apply to all actors, directors, producers, and event organizers in Punjab and beyond.

Additionally, the Union Government recognizes December 26 as “Veer Baal Diwas” each year to honor the bravery and sacrifice of Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh.
