Dharni becomes SGPC President for the 5th time: Defeated Mithu Singh by 99 votes, Cheema says—This is a very big achievement.

For the fifth time, Harjinder Singh Dharni has been elected President of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). Mithu Singh, the revived Akali Dal contender, lost to him by 99 votes.

Advocate Harjinder Singh Dharni called for a show of hands to be used in the poll at the outset. His appeal was denied, though, and voting was then used to begin the election process.

Daljit Singh Cheema, leader of the Akali Dal, declared, “This is a very big achievement.” After consulting all members, Sukhbir Singh Badal announced Advocate Dharni’s name. He received 117 votes, while opposing candidate Mithu Singh received 18.

He expressed his gratitude to each and every member for selecting an honest personality once more. He said that the opposition received 33 votes when the votes were cast last year as well, and that number has further dropped this time.
