Student Spends Night on Road in Chandigarh: Other Organisations Will Also Begin Hunger Strike Today at PU; Congress Leader Says Conditions of Student Protest Not Acceptable.

An increasing number of students are protesting Panjab University’s requirement for an affidavit in order to be admitted. Punjab University student leader Abhishek Dagar slept on the road without food on Wednesday, October 29, 2025. In front of the Vice-Chancellor’s office, he is on a hunger strike.

Today, more students are anticipated to start the rally. Politicians from both parties have also begun to participate in this protest. Congress Leader of the Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa and Barinder Dhillon both claim that Panjab University will not put up with any kind of restriction on the fight. They went on to say that these circumstances are unacceptable.

Abhishek Dagar, a student at Punjab University, is on a hunger strike.

On the second day of the hunger strike he initiated, more students joined Abhishek Dagar, the leader of the Student Organisation of Panjab University (SOPU). He spent the first night of his protest on the chilly road. He had to request a duvet or blanket for the sit-in late at night because of the cold. Starting this morning, the demonstration will continue here. Dagar declared that Punjab University students in Chandigarh will become more agitated.

This protest has been started against the affidavit being taken by Panjab University before admission.

A student at Panjab University’s University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS) department named Abhishek Dagar has said that he won’t eat anything till the decision to implement the affidavit is reversed.

Order requiring students to provide an affidavit: In June 2025, Panjab University issued an order requiring applicants for admission to sign an affidavit. There are eleven different kinds of conditions listed here. These include an agreement that the students will not engage in any form of protest on campus and that no criminal charges will be filed against them. From the start, members of different student organisations have protested against this.

The University Administration has not withdrawn the affidavit or held open discussions with the student body in spite of intense criticism and multiple student protests in recent months.

Allegations against the University: Students remembered that a petition contesting the affidavit had also been submitted to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. However, the University Administration took an anti-student attitude, indicating that it was unwilling to maintain democratic accountability.

The affidavit’s conditions state that protests would not take place on college campuses or in residential neighbourhoods.

Shouting slogans will only be permitted at a loudness higher than a predetermined decibel level.

Students are required to wear their ID cards at all times.

Bringing weapons or dangerous objects is prohibited.
