The former Akali Dal minister, Bikram Singh Majithia, is currently facing major legal challenges in Punjab.
- Disproportionate Assets (DA) Case:
- Allegation: According to reports, he allegedly laundered more than ₹540 crore in “drug money” and accumulated assets that were out of proportion to his known sources of income. This led to his arrest by the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) in June 2025.
- Current Status: His remand has been prolonged on several occasions, and he is currently in judicial custody (in a jail, usually Nabha jail).
- Bail: A Mohali court dismissed his regular bail application, pointing to the ongoing investigation and the gravity of the charges in the DA case. Drug Case (NDPS Act):
-
- Background: The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was another charge brought against Majithia in 2021.
- Current Status: In August 2022, the Punjab and Haryana High Court granted him bail in this matter.
- Ongoing Legal Battle: Through the courts, notably the Punjab and Haryana High Court, his legal team is still contesting his arrests and detention. The defense argues that the accusations have political motivations.
