BRTS Lane Becoming an Accident Track in Amritsar: About 3 Accidents Daily Due to High Speed, Police Making a Strategy to Stop Them.


Amritsar’s BRTS road is turning into an accident scene. Three people lost their lives recently when their heads struck the roof of a BRTS bus. A young man named Abhishek is currently battling for his life in the intensive care unit after suffering severe injuries in a collision between two cars in the Putlighar neighborhood of Amritsar.

He struck a car in the BRTS lane after losing control of his fast-moving vehicle. Due to its approximately 9-meter width, people frequently drive cars on this lane, especially at night, thinking it is a racetrack. According to reports, the Putlighar area is where the accident involving Abhishek occurred.

Four Principal Reasons for BRTS Accidents
This track is five to nine feet wide. On roads where a single lane has been constructed for BRTS, the width is five feet. High-speed autos, cyclists, pedestrians, and other vehicle drivers who enter this lane now pose a risk, even though a BRTS bus cannot operate without braking.

This track was constructed with the knowledge that buses and other public transit vehicles could pass over it unhindered. This track has no speed breakers anywhere. This is exploited by those who drive here, who accelerate their cars to top speed.

Both sides of the track have grills added. Vehicles running unhindered don’t have to worry about swerving into the adjacent track. Nevertheless, there are some broken railings. The driver loses balance when something unexpectedly crosses in front of a fast-moving car on these damaged rails.

Nighttime is when 80 percent of the accidents on this circuit occur. On this track, drivers speed excessively at night. They are struck by other vehicles once the car flips over due to even a small impediment.

Attempts Are Being Made to Prevent Track Accidents
Following the recent deaths of three youngsters, ADCP Amandeep Kaur announced that heavy and large vehicles are no longer permitted to enter this track. The BRTS track is now only accessible by two-wheelers and small autos. To make sure that cars and two-wheelers don’t go too fast here, rules are being developed and meetings are being held. Recognize that BRTS didn’t even operate for 700 days.
The Amritsar BRTS service has had numerous difficulties. Protests started when it was inaugurated in December 2016, and full service started in January 2019. For 700 days during the previous five years, the BRTS plan prevented services from using these lanes. In December 2024, there was an unsuccessful attempt to reactivate it.
