SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami will meet Bhai Rajoana today. The Supreme Court has fixed October 15 as the date for a decision on the mercy petition.
Amritsar The Supreme Court has once again brought attention to the long-standing problem of the Central Government’s persistent delays in releasing Sikh inmates, also known as Bandi Singhs. Hearing the case of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, who was found guilty in the Beant Singh assassination case, the Supreme Court has given a stringent ruling, stating that the case would not be further postponed and directing the government to make a decision on his mercy appeal by October 15.
Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami, the president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), has scheduled a meeting with Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana in Patiala Jail today (Monday, October 13) in accordance with the Supreme Court’s orders.
Discussions with Bhai Rajoana about the government’s decision and the SGPC’s future plan will take place at the meeting.
The Center’s Strict Directive from the Supreme Court
Because Rajoana’s compassion appeal was delayed, the Supreme Court was considering a petition to commute his death sentence to life in prison around two weeks ago. In a forceful statement, the Supreme Court had questioned the Centre, “Why hasn’t Rajoana been hanged yet? Who is in charge of this? At least the execution has not been halted.
The Supreme Court requested that Additional Solicitor General K.M. Nataraj respond to these incisive queries as soon as possible. As a result, the case hearing was rescheduled for October 15.

Members will show up at 2:00 PM.
Wednesday is the day of the hearing in the case of Balwant Singh Rajoana. But at 11 AM, the SGPC has scheduled a meeting. The topic of Rajoana’s problem will be covered in this meeting. Furthermore, the SGPC will discuss the awareness march and the humanitarian monies that were given to the victims. The Rajoana issue will continue to be the most crucial one at this meeting, according to SGPC members.
29 Years in Rajoana and Jail
Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi had told the Supreme Court on behalf of Balwant Singh Rajoana that Rajoana had been on death row for 15 years and had been incarcerated for over 29 years. Therefore, the Court had stated that the Gurdwara Committee, not him, had filed the mercy petition the last time it was filed.
The regulations and provisions, however, state that it makes no difference who submits the petition. You should think about it. The Court had stated that the matter could not be postponed any longer because so much time had gone by, and a decision had to be made sooner or later.
Nothing took place. Following the Final Hearings
Furthermore, Mukul Rohatgi said that nothing has occurred in this regard. He submitted a second petition in 2024 for this reason. The Centre was given one final opportunity to deliberate on his mercy petition by the special bench of Chief Justice B.R. Gavai, Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra, and Justice K.V. Viswanathan, which issued the ruling in January.
