Congress MP Randhawa writes a letter to CM Mann, raising the Amritsar-Gurdaspur flood issue; says punishing junior engineers is not enough.
In a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Punjab Congress MP and former Deputy Chief Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa brought up a significant issue regarding the flood situation in Amritsar and Gurdaspur. Randhawa has called for action against senior authorities as well, stating that merely disciplining young engineers is insufficient in this case. “Who was on the spot during the critical hours of August 26 and 27?”

Randhawa wrote in his letter. What caused the regulations to be broken?
“What prevented Madhopur from being coordinated?” According to him, the public wants justice and an open response. The Ranjit Sagar Dam’s water release was the cause of the disaster.
Amritsar and Gurdaspur experienced an extraordinary flood on the evening of August 26, 2025, as a result of the Ranjit Sagar Dam releasing over 6.0 lakh cusecs of water. This was a blatant case of administrative and technical failure in addition to being a natural tragedy. Only an SDO and an executive engineer remain suspended at this time. Did the Chief Engineers of the Madhopur Headworks and Ranjit Sagar Dam neglect to assure planning and coordination, or was it the Irrigation Department? The accountability won’t be complete until this question is resolved.
There, which cop was on duty?
Which senior authorities actually attended during the crucial hours of August 26 and 27, when the Ranjit Sagar Dam’s water inflow and outflow were at their highest?
What was the exact reservoir water level at the time the decision to release such a big discharge was made?
Why weren’t the Ranjit Sagar Dam’s floodgates opened in advance of coordination with downstream constructions like the Madhopur Headworks and Shahpur Kandi Dam? Why did the water released from RSD (Ranjit Sagar Dam) not coincide with the opening of Madhopur’s gates, or at least those downstream?
